Chapter 7
The last thing I remember, upon waking up at 1pm, was looking at the clock and thinking, “Damn, it is already 7am.”
I looked at Britta still sleeping peacefully and left her hot ass like that. Deciding to chef it up, I went into the kitchen and pulled out some ingredients for stew chicken, which included onions, green and red peppers, fresh garlic cloves and olive oil. Realizing I left the chicken in the freezer I took out the smallest pack. I unwrapped the plastic and set it in a big bowl of water with salt and lime. I was hoping it would defrost fast. Grabbing the rice pot, I filled it up with water half way and added a drop of corn oil and dash of salt. Being impatient, I reached my hand into the bowl of chicken peeling the stuck together pieces apart. I started to clean the excess fat off but left a little skin on. This process was repeated until the six pieces of chicken were thoroughly cleaned. Then I rinsed them off with vinegar and placed them in a gray stew cooking pot and seasoned them with half a pack of sazon and a little adobo (a little something picked up from watching Irene cook), then I poured in the peppers and things with a little water. Turning on a low flame under the pot, I must say my cooking skills were improving. I went into the living room and turned on the TV and game system. Getting in a few battles of Naruto I silently prayed I would reach level 15 before Britta woke up and started complaining how much of a dude I was.
After a while the aroma from the food started wafting through the air and I swear I felt my adoptive mother Cynthia’s presence over my shoulder. Going into the kitchen and searching through the pot and pan cabinets I finally found a medium size quartz pan, placed a few drops of water, some I can’t believe it’s not butter a sliced up clove of garlic and rinsed and placed already chopped up kale in there also.
I drizzled some olive oil on top then covered the green vegetable. Now this is something I remember seeing Cynthia do. She was from the south and believed you sautéed your greens to keep in some of the nutrients. The more I thought about it, I really didn’t know if it was a southern thing or healthy thing. Whatever it was, it was now my thing. Smiling to myself, I started humming one of Cynthia’s favorite tunes, ‘I love music.’
I left the kale and rest of the food to cook on a slow simmer, went into the living room, grabbed my laptop and logged into my Facebook account. It seemed Capone was up and wanted to come chill at my house instead of going out. I told him Britta was still here and he should grab Little Lyric before coming in order to avoid me or Lette, Britta’s sister, having to take the trip.
